Bellmore New Chair of the Board at SCDSB

12/02/2015 - On Tuesday, December 1, 2015 Trustee Michael Bellmore was acclaimed as the new Board Chair for the Sudbury Catholic District School Board. Born in Sudbury, Bellmore is a proud alumnus of Sudbury Catholic Schools (Immaculate Conception and St. Charles College). He was elected to the Board of Trustees in 2010, however he was elected to the former Sudbury District Roman Catholic Separate School Board in 1994 as one of the youngest ever elected, and served until 1997. Read more...

Cards Do It - Largest Single Donation to the Sudbury Food Bank for a Five Day Drive

10/28/2015 - The goal was to raise 60 thousand cans in five days. The result was astounding. Students and staff, along with the support of its feeder schools and the community raised 125, 452 cans to line the shelves of the food bank heading into the holiday season. The breakdown is twenty thousand dollars in cash collected and 25, 000 cans. Students will spend the day assisting with the transport of the food to the food bank warehouse. Read more...

10/21/2015 - Members of the St. Charles College Student Council are selling tees in the main foyer of the school this week to support the Sudbury Food Bank.  The t-shirts which are retailing for twenty dollars go to supporting the school’s annual food drive.   That means the sale of one shirt equates to 100 cans to line the shelves at the food bank. Read more...

Coffee Drive at Pius XII to Support Elgin St. Mission

06/11/2015 - Kathleen Donnelly, Resource Teacher at Pius XII Catholic Elementary School has initiated an urgently needed "coffee drive" to assist the Elgin Street Mission, who are in short supply of the popular beverage that helps many people get through a rough day and provide some comfort. In the spirit of helping our community, Kathleen has inspired the students and their families to help support the organization by donating such items as coffee, coffeemate creamer, tea bags, disposable cups, coffee filters and sugar.  Read more...

Update on Negotiations

04/24/2015 - You may have heard in the media that the Ontario English Catholic Teachers Association ((OECTA), representing elementary, secondary and occasional teachers in our Board voted to approve strike action. Central bargaining is continuing between the province, unions and the Ontario Catholic School Trustees Association (OCSTA), which represents Catholic school boards at the provincial table. At present, we are not aware of any planned labour disruptions by OECTA. Read more...

SCDSB Band Enjoying a Successful Season

03/26/2014 - The Sudbury Catholic Elementary Band, directed by Vice Principal JoAnne Comisso and teaher Leanne Urso, has just finished a very successful Festival season. On February 27 the students performed at the Northern Ontario Music Festival, held at Sudbury Secondary School, where the students received a Silver award. To follow up that achievement, they competed at the Kiwanis Music Festival on March 24 at St. Benedict School. The band was very excited to receive a Gold award! All their hard work is definitely paying off, and we wish them continued success as they head into their spring concert season. Learning About Setting Goals and Self-Esteem at Pius XII

11/25/2013 - Pius XII Catholic Elementary School was honoured to have Amber Konikow talk to the students about smart goals, self-esteem and motivation. The students learned about practice, being prepared, hard work, and dedication. Amber spoke about her difficult times in school and how she was picked on, however, having the support of close friends, family and teachers allowed her to make the right choices in her life. 11/19/2013 - Brodie Dionne, a student at Pius XII from the Care and Development class was thrilled to have Isaac Oliveira, Grade 9 Bishop Alexander Carter Secondary School in his class on Nov. 6th for Shadow Day. Isaac shadowed his mom, Nancy Oliviera (Educational Assistant) for the day. Nancy states 'I really do appreciate the opportunity to allow my son to shadow me at work. 04/25/2013 - Pius students and staff never take for granted the hard work, dedication and commitment that Mrs. Barbe, the school secretary puts in every day. Mrs. Barbe had a surprise when she entered the gym filled with staff and students who wished her a Happy Secretary Day and presented her with gifts, hand made letter of thanks and flowers. "I like Mrs. Barbe, everyday she is happy and nice to everyone in the school" says Grade 1 student Shaylisah Dixon. Hockey Blast at Pius XII

04/22/2013 - Pius XII Catholic Elementary School grade 4-8 students had a 'blast' recently when they partnered up with the Knights of Columbus Council #10888 to participate in a Hockey Blast Competition. Students from grades 4-8 were able to show off their stickwork and accuracy in the competition. Learning Strategies Teacher, Kathleen Donnelly says, "The Knights of Columbus Council #10888 have been actively involved in the school by volunteering their time for events such as the Freethrow Competition, Hockey Blast, Grill Cheese Day and Shrove Tuesday (Pancake Day) -- it is awesome to have them volunteering in our school!" Read more...


Earth Day is Everyday at Pius XII Catholic Elementary School

04/16/2013 - Everyday is Earth Day at Pius XII Catholic Elementary School! Throughout the school year students, staff, parents and community partners have been involved in many ongoing environmental projects. Pius XII students continue to have garbage free lunch days, collecting old and used batteris, cellphones, ink cartridges, and juice pouches. This month, Pius XII students have begun planting Cosmos and Morning Glory flowers that will be donated to Minnow Lake Restoration group, who will then plant them in the surrounding Minnow Lake Area. The Grade 5 class is the school's Dearness Conservation Lead Team and came up with the idea of reusing yogurt containers from Tasty Tuesdays as a mini-pot to plant the seeds and giving back the flowers to brighten up the community. A special thank you goes out to John Lindsey, Chair of Minnow Lake Community Action Network and President of the Minnow Lake Restoration Group and Dominique Viau for their generous donation of seeds. Read more...

02/27/2013 - Nicholas Groulx is a student who is currently in the Care and Development classroom at Pius XII Catholic Elementary School. He has multiple disabilities and one of them affects the way he walks. Everyday Nicholas comes to school on a wheelchair, and at school, he practices his walking skills by walking the halls with the assistance of a walker. Just this month, Nicholas has proved that the age old saying that "practice pays off" is indeed true. Pius XII staff and students awarded Nicholas for his huge accomplishment -- he has progressed so well with his walking that he no longer needs the use of his wheelchair or his walker! Nicholas' wheelchair has been donated to Motion Specialties, a home health care equipment supplier. The wheelchair will come in handy for another individual who will require the chair.  Read more...

Lights, Camera, Action at Pius XII

02/21/2013 - Upon arriving at the classroom, invited guests were greeted by a sign welcoming them to the Pius XII Catholic Elementary School Intermediate Lifeskills class movie premiere. Students had the screen ready, and chairs set up theatre style for the start of the movie. Since October, the students, their teacher Ginny Cristo-Long, their Educational Assistant Lynn Dubois, and vice principal Tina Timpano have been working on this class project, which was the creation of a movie that reflected upon the essential question – “What does Jesus ask of us?” Read more...


National Flag Day at Pius XII

02/15/2013 - Pius XII Catholic Elementary School celebrate National Flag Day. Flag Day is marked annually February 15, ever since the flag first flew over Parliament Hill in Ottawa in 1965. As part of Spirit Week, the students and staff entered the school wearing red, white and maple leafs, representing the Canadian flag. Vice Principal, Tina Timpano says that 'we just want people to take a moment and recognize the flag, a sign that gives us peace and unity and to be proud Canadians." While parading, Kindergarten student, Emma Lafontaine says 'I can't believe I'm 100 days smarter today'! Pius XII Celebrates Family Literacy Day

01/28/2013 - Pius XII Catholic Elementary School celebrated Family Literacy Day, a national awareness initiative created by ABC Life Literacy Canada in 1999 and held annually on January 27th to raise awareness fo the importance of reading and engaging in other literacy-related activities as a family. "Nothing But Net" at SCDSB

01/22/2013 - Pius XII Catholic Elementary School is one of many of the Sudbury Catholic Schools who have partnered up with the Knights of Columbus for their annual 'Free Throw Competition'. Since 1972, councils have sponsored the Knights of Columbus International Free Throw Championship for boys and girls between the ages of 10 and 14. 11/22/2012 - Grade 6 student, Grace Tilbury reads the book "Have You Filled a Bucket Today?" to Kindergarten students Gabriel Broughton and Ramsey Tolkacz. The message of the book is to be kind to people. In the story, you fill a bucket when you show love to someone, when you say or do somethink kind, or even when you give someone a smile. 11/21/2012 - Pius XII Catholic Elementary students participated recently in a 'Pinky Pledge' as part of their anti-bullying week events. Pius has linked up with Secret Deodorant with an anti-bullying campaign 'Mean Stinks'. Girls made a pinky promise to be a 'Drama Free School'. Students pledged that they will be kind, symbolized by wearing blue polish on their pinky fingers. Cardinals Share Their 'Goodness' with the Sudbury Food Bank

10/22/2012 - The line ‘Teach me goodness’ is an integral part of the St. Charles College motto. This week, the students at the school learned about goodness and shared the fruits of their labour. The secondary school students, coupled with children in the feeder schools canvassed together for the largest school food drive in the city. The goal was to raise 60 000 cans for the Sudbury Food Bank and the Cardinals surpassed that goal with a new all-time total of 125 080 cans. Thanksgiving at Pius XII

10/11/2012 - Pius XII, Grade 1 students celebrate and learn about Thanksgiving. Classroom teacher, Judy Bowes, teaches the students about the importance of giving thanks, not just on Thanksgiving holiday, but on everyday. The students celebrated by beginning with a procession, displaying artwork and dancing the 'Circle of Friends'. Prior to celebrating with a healthy feast of cheese, crackers, fruit and vegetables, students expressed prayers of thanks - especially Mrs. Bowes for "letting us have a fun time celebrating Thanksgiving".  Read more...

Pius XII Donates to Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation

09/26/2012 - Students at Pius XII participated in a walk-a-thon and raised $963.15 towards Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Catholic School Council Chair, Shelley Sloan, was overwhelmed with the generosity and success of the walk-a-thon. 'My son, Nicholas, attends Pius XII school and has Type 2 diabetes. This was a great opportunity to educate the school community about diabetes and the importance of healthy eating and exercise". 09/19/2012 - Pius XII Care and Development student, Nicholas Groulx, gets assistance from his classroom teacher, Noreen Pellatt by putting pennies in the jug. Pius XII students are participating in a fundraiser called 'Pennies for Pediatrics'. The students are donating their pennies so that they can help the Children's Treatment Centre and Health Sciences North raise money to make improvements to their hydrotherapy pool -- a pool that is used by some Pius XII students.  Read more...

Partners Sign Community Threat Assessment Protocol

04/04/2012 - Representatives of the Greater Sudbury Police Service, area school boards and local agencies signed a Community Threat Assessment Protocol on March 27, 2012, pledging to work together to ensure schools remain safe for students and staff. The Community Threat Assessment Protocol is a collaborative response to student behaviour that may pose a risk to other students, staff and members of the community. 02/22/2012 - The students at Pius XII School celebrated Shrove Tuesday with a little help from some special guests, The Holy Redeemer Knights of Columbus Council # 10888. Gerry Baronette facilitated the event and brought 9 of his brothersî with him to prepare delicious homemade pancakes for the 320 students. The students were all very excited and appreciative that the Knights took the time to volunteer and donate the supplies to make them a fabulous pancake lunch. "Filling their Buckets" at Pius XII

11/15/2011 - Students at Pius XII school are learning how to fill their buckets! Through a school community building activity senior student, Cody Watson read to the ELK students a story about "filling their buckets" by doing good deeds, and then explored different ways to make it happen. Kindergarteners as well as all students now understand that everytime they do or say something nice for someone else they're actually filling their own "buckets" and the other student's "bucket". Student council can often be heard during morning announcements giving reminder messages to keep buckets full of positivity and its catching on. Pius Students Learn About Fire Prevention

10/11/2011 - In preparation for fire prevention week, early learning kindergarten students and staff at Pius XII school welcomed firefighters from the Minnow Lake fire station. Students learned about fire safety, firefighters' protective equipment and explored the cabin of the firetruck. They practiced techniques such as "stop, drop and roll" and learned about the importance of fire detectors and evacuation plans. ELK students enjoyed sitting in the driver's seat of the firetruck and many were overheard telling friends "when I'm older I'm going to be a firefighter too!" Read more...

03/23/2011 - With the recent addition of ipad centres in the ELK classrooms at Pius XII school, many students are opting for time with technology during play! The kindergarten classrooms received 4 ipads each loaded with interactive games focused on the development of students' fine motor, literacy and numeracy skills.
