Our Programs

Themes and Spirit Days

Pius XII Penguins participate in Crazy Hair Day, Western Days, Colour Days, Pyjama Days, Crazy Hat Days along with many other specialty days throughout the year. 

Math Challenge

Students from grades 5 to 8 can participate in Math Challenge.  These children, in groups of three, need to work cooperatively in order to solve challenging math problems.  The teams then compete against many other schools within our Board.  Competitions begin in October and end in May.  Winners are announced in June. 

Community Builders

Students from grades 5 to 8 along with staff participate in a multiple day institute on leadership.  Skilled trainers help groups explore such topics as friends and allies, eliminating racism, listening powerfully, understanding gender equity and building an inclusive classroom.  Students deliver these messages to classes within the school.

Boys’ Basketball

Students from grades 7 and 8 are invited to join the team.  Practices and games take place after school hours.  Weekend tournaments usually take place in the winter.

Girls’ Basketball

Students from grades 7 and 8 are invited to join the team.  Practices and games take place after school hours.  Weekend tournaments usually take place in the winter.

Boys’ Volleyball

Students from grades 7 and 8 are invited to join the team.  Practices and games take place after school hours.  Weekend tournaments usually take place in the fall.

Girls’ Volleyball

Students from grades 7 and 8 are invited to join the team.  Practices and games take place after school hours.  Weekend tournaments usually take place in the fall.

Boys’ and Girls’ Handball

Students from grades 4, 5 and 6 are invited to join the team.  Practices and games take place after school hours.  Weekend tournaments usually take place in the winter.

Track and Field

Students from grade 3 to 8 take part in the school wide track and field event.  The top athletes will participate in the School Board wide event in late May or early June.  All events take place during school hours.

Curling

Students from grade 6 to 8 are invited to join the team.  Practices take place after school and a bonspiel takes place on a weekend in the winter.

Dearness Conservation

The grade 5 class is our schools’ conservation champions.  They organize garbage free lunches, energy saving initiatives and the school’s recycling program.

Play Days and Carnival Days

Held at different times throughout the year.

Caught in the Act

This school incentive program is aimed at recognizing the students who perform acts of kindness or of good citizenship in the school.

Oral Communication Competition

Every second year, the students from grades 3 to 8 can participate in this competition at the school level.  Winners move on the School Board competition.

Spelling Bee Competition

Every second year, the students from grades 3 to 8 can participate in this competition at the school level.  Winners move on the School Board competition.

Best Start Program

Pius XII is pleased to be a Best Start Hub. Best Start Hubs offer children and their families a place to meet, to learn and to grow together.

At your local Hub you will be able to:

  • Give your child a chance to play and make friendsMeet other parents/caregivers

  • Enroll your child in a child care or preschool learning program
  • Receive support and resources for your child
  • Help prepare your child for school

Maple Tree Preschool
